Gamma-Dynacare Medical Laboratories announced today that it has acquired Warnex Medical Laboratories, a division of Warnex Inc. which provides specialized laboratory testing services to the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors. 

Warnex Medical Laboratories provides specialized laboratory testing to hospitals, private laboratories and medical specialists and has extensive expertise in molecular diagnostics, pharmacogenetics and personalized medicine services.  As a development-driven medical laboratory, Warnex Medical Laboratories focuses on developing innovative assays, and refining existing assays, to provide greater clinical value for reliable and cost-effective patient assessment and management.

Warnex Medical Laboratories’ biochemistry services include the Prenatest® prenatal screening test – which combines a blood test with ultrasound imaging to assess the risk of Down syndrome and other fetal chromosomal abnormalities – and the PCA3 test for the detection of prostate cancer.  The laboratory also performs a variety of microbiology, virology and serology tests using advanced techniques to provide data to diagnose and evaluate infectious diseases, such as the Influenza A H1N1 virus.  Its molecular diagnostics services include DNA-oriented genetic predisposition and tracking tests in various fields of medicine, including oncology, endocrinology and hematology.  Through its PRO-DNA Services subsidiary, Warnex Medical Laboratories is also a leading provider of DNA identification tests for forensic and parentage testing purposes.  

Warnex Medical Laboratories operates within Warnex Inc’s 44,000-square-foot laboratory facility in Laval, Quebec and a 6,000 square-foot facility in Thunder Bay, Ontario.  Under the terms of the agreement, Gamma-Dynacare will assume the lease at the Thunder Bay facility and will sub-lease 7,500-square-feet of laboratory and office space at the Laval facility.  Gamma-Dynacare will provide employment to all Warnex Medical Laboratories employees.   Gamma-Dynacare plans to operate Warnex Medical Laboratories on a “status quo” basis, with no immediate changes to services or operations.  Dr. Yvan Côté, currently the Vice-President and General Manager of Warnex Medical Laboratories and Warnex PRO-DNA Services, will be assuming a new role with Gamma-Dynacare and will continue to oversee day-to-day operations in Laval and Thunder Bay.

Gamma-Dynacare Medical Laboratories today announced the opening of a new Patient Services Centre in Vaughan, Ontario, where patients can have blood and other types of medical specimens collected for laboratory tests ordered by area physicians and nurse practitioners.The facility, Gamma-Dynacare’s second in the City of Vaughan, is located at 955 Major Mackenzie Drive (at Bathurst Street) in the Upper Thornhill Centre -- a new medical/office/retail complex developed by Condor Properties Ltd., which hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the site today to mark its official opening. 

“We are pleased to have this opportunity to extend specimen collection services to the residents of this growing community and their health care providers,” said Mr. Craig Ivany, Vice-President, Patient Services and Logistics.  “This new Patient Services Centre offers a full range of services, delivered by our skilled and caring staff, in a setting that has been designed to make the experience as convenient and comfortable as possible for patients.” 

Located on the ground floor of the new building, the 2,050-square-foot facility is fully wheelchair accessible.  It features a comfortable waiting room equipped with a large-screen TV, four spacious cubicles for blood collection, a private room for electrocardiogram and Holter monitoring tests and private washroom facilities within the suite. Patient reception, specimen processing, report distribution and other workflow-related processes were carefully planned to meet the objectives of minimizing patient wait times, particularly during peak times in the morning, and allowing Gamma-Dynacare’s medical laboratory assistants and other facility staff to focus their time on providing care to patients.   The Centre is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., and Wednesday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

“We are very proud of our innovative approach in designing this new Patient Services Centre in Vaughan,” concluded Mr. Ivany.  “We look forward to serving this community’s health care providers and their patients with laboratory services of the highest quality.”

In Ontario, laboratories are accredited by the Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA) program and the Quality Management Program – Laboratory Services (QMPLS), with requirements based on ISO Standard 15189.  While these requirements state that validated procedures must be used, the extent of method validation, the performance characteristics measured and the approach to validation are left to the discretion of the laboratory.  This workshop is designed to provide laboratories with a practical guide to validation of quantitative methods and instrumentation.

In addition, laboratories seeking certification under ISO 15189 are required to determine the Uncertainty of Measurement where relevant and possible. Gamma-Dynacare Medical Laboratories announced today that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Central Medical Laboratories, Manitoba’s largest private provider of community laboratory services. The transaction is expected to close December 1, 2008.

Gamma-Dynacare was selected as part of an annual study conducted by Mediacorp Canada, Inc., publisher of the book “Canada’s Top 100 Employers”.  The study profiles organizations that offer exceptional workplace environments for employees based on a number of factors, including work atmosphere and communication, benefits, training and skills development and community involvement. Gamma-Dynacare will be profiled in the book and also was recognized in the October 13, 2008, special issue of Maclean’s magazine. In addition, as one of the GTA’s Top 75 Employers, Gamma-Dynacare was listed in a special editorial supplement to The Toronto Star on October 18, 2008.

Gamma-Dynacare’s submission to Mediacorp highlighted the employee programs, learning and development opportunities, health and safety practices, and community projects that demonstrate the company’s commitment to employees and help to create a spirited and engaging atmosphere. For example, events and celebrations held throughout the year include an annual REWARDS gala, which provides an opportunity for employees to be recognized for exceptional performance and to give recognition to colleagues they feel have earned their praise.

Gamma-Dynacare was recognized by the judges for its family-friendly benefit programs, which include a matching RSP plan, a great benefits plan, top-up benefits for parental and compassionate leaves, and starting employees at three weeks paid vacation plus two personal paid days off.

Gamma-Dynacare also received good marks for its training and skills development programs. In addition to tuition reimbursement and regular “Lunch and Learn” events, Gamma-Dynacare holds a continuing education symposium each year, covering topics that range from future healthcare trends to enhancing interpersonal skills. To help the children of its employees pursue higher education, Gamma-Dynacare awards up to 15 scholarship grants annually to eligible dependants of its employees, and has awarded nearly $200,000 under this program since its inception.
